We welcomed our daughter into this world at the Women's Center at Central Texas Medical Center (CTMC). During my stay, I was lucky enough to have Janie Aguilar as our post-partum nurse both nights after delivery. Janie went above and beyond what is expected of her as a nurse. She was so patient and caring, I felt as if I had known her for years. The time she spent teaching us how to get the baby to latch spoke volumes to me. She knew how important breastfeeding was to me and did everything in her power to help realize that dream.
Janie also held my baby as if she were her own grandchild—nothing "routine" about it. It was as if my baby was the only baby in the whole world that mattered to her. She also did other small things that said so much about her character: she spoke to my husband and me equally—always making sure to include him, and she made our experience comfortable and personable. Another example is when I was showering and Janie slipped into the bathroom to lay a towel by the stall so I wouldn't slip when I got out. I believe Janie should represent the standard of care for nurses everywhere.
