Florida Hospital Heartland Medical Center Hosts Red Hat Tea Party and Health Fair1/31/2007
On Sunday, January 28, Florida Hospital Heartland Medical Center became a sea of red and purple when more than 500 "Red Hatters" descended on the hospital for an afternoon of fun and education. This year's event was a revamped version of the Red Hat Health Summit, which has been a big hit for five years. The number of people wanting to attend had far exceeded the number we could accommodate with a sit-down day of breakfast, lunch and health lectures. Even adding a second day for an additional group didn't help. We had to find a better way. The two-hour Tea Party and Health Fair was our very successful solution.
Tables were set up for hospital departments and manned with staff members who answered questions and handed out literature. Health-related vendors were invited to man booths as well; Good Sheppard Hospice, The Highlands County Sheriff's Department (with the File of Life medical information program), Heartland Home Health, Lifeline home response, Lifelink organ donation, and Daybreak Counseling are just a few of the organizations who participated. Door prize drawings were held throughout the afternoon. Chaplains were available to discuss Living Wills.
Several varieties of teas were served with cookies and petits fours. Entertainment was provided by the "Highlandaires", a 70-man chorus and the 4-member barbershop quartet, "Sounds of Sebring."
With membership exceeding 2800 in Highlands County alone, the Red Hat Society is a force to be reckoned with. As we all know, 90 percent of the health decisions in a family are made by the woman of the house. Here in Florida's Heartland, a majority of those women are Red Hat age! What better way to get the word out about our services and other important health and social services in the area?
