33 Local Teens Complete Summer Volunteer Program at Huguley

8/14/2007

Thirty-three local teenagers have completed a summer volunteer program at Huguley Memorial Medical Center.  The teens volunteered two to three days each week in twenty departments throughout the hospital.  In patient units, volunteers visited patients, refilled water, transported patients and ran errands for nurses.  In other departments, volunteers delivered flowers, picked up menus, sorted and restocked supplies, sold popcorn and coffee, and provided office help.

“The teens bring to Huguley their enthusiasm, a willingness to help in any way, and a sense of wonder.  In turn, we give them their first glimpse of the professional world, beginning with an initial interview and including the responsibilities of being on time and meeting job expectations,” said Volunteer Director Pat Dupper.  “Our young volunteers are often surprised at the many types of positions necessary to run a hospital; it’s not just nurses and doctors.”

Kelsey Foreman, who will be a sophomore at Grandview High School, worked in the nutrition department, outpatient surgery and the progressive care unit.  “I enjoyed working with the nurses and patients, so I’ll consider a career in health care.”

For more than 25 years, Huguley has hosted teen volunteers in the summer.  Some have pursued higher education in medical field, and a few have made careers at Huguley.

Allison Homer, a senior at Southwest Christian School in Fort Worth, returned for her fifth summer as a Huguley volunteer.  “I enjoy helping other people.  Sometimes just giving someone a smile will improve their day.”  Her brother Andrew, a sophomore, finished his third summer at Huguley and says he has learned at a young age to appreciate good health.  “Volunteering gives me a feeling of accomplishment from knowing that I’m useful and working hard.”
